Why This Opportunity Stands Out
Join a growing infrastructure organization supporting critical Outside Plant network expansion projects in a role that combines design, technical problem-solving, and infrastructure impact. This opportunity offers hands-on involvement in utility and fiber design projects, exposure to permitting and right-of-way considerations, and collaboration with engineering and construction teams supporting essential connectivity infrastructure. Team members benefit from a technical, team-oriented environment that values precision, growth, and long-term development.
Overview
Our customer is seeking a Designer to support ongoing telecommunications projects involving underground and aerial construction drawing development for utility installations. This role is responsible for preparing and updating Outside Plant (OSP) designs, supporting utility research, translating field notes into engineering drawings, completing markups, supporting plan preparation and submittals, and coordinating with municipalities, engineers, and construction teams.
The ideal candidate will bring strong AutoCAD 2D drafting experience, familiarity with layered design environments, an understanding of utility construction drawings, and the ability to support production-quality drafting while maintaining accuracy and QA/QC requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize AutoCAD for base mapping and preparation of underground and aerial OSP construction drawings.
- Support design of running line selection, manhole/handhole locations, conduit, innerduct, microduct, and fiber optic cable layouts.
- Prepare make-ready engineering and pole-related design documentation.
- Develop utility designs involving public rights-of-way, private easements, and existing utility infrastructure.
- Research existing utilities including water, sewer, electric, and gas systems.
- Support review and coordination involving encroachment permits, easements, rights-of-way, and environmental permits.
- Interact with municipalities, telecom engineers, and construction/maintenance teams to obtain OSP records, utility information, assessor maps, construction prints, and recorded document data.
- Conduct site surveys and translate field notes into updated engineering design drawings.
- Complete markups, prepare report graphics, support plan set-up and preparation, and assist with submittals.
- Maintain QA/QC processes and support drafting quality requirements.
- Apply standard AutoCAD drafting techniques including breaklines, fillet radius settings, layer management, and reference-based scaling.
- Conduct field visits as required to support project needs, including site assessments and data collection. This role requires regular driving to various project locations; therefore, a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle are required.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1+ year of professional AutoCAD 2D experience.
- Strong understanding of 2D CAD drafting environments, including use of layers and related drafting features.
- Experience with AutoCAD commands including breakline creation, fillet radius settings, changing layers, and scaling objects using reference methods.
- AutoCAD knowledge, experience, and drafting skills required.
- Experience reading blueprints, conduit prints, and construction drawings preferred.
- Adequate understanding of basic math and ability to utilize Excel.
- Self-motivated with strong time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to support QA/QC requirements and maintain drafting accuracy.
- Valid driver’s license and clear driving record required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with telecommunications design and/or utility design preferred.
- Experienced OSP Designers considered at higher compensation range based on experience.
- Familiarity with utility design, permitting, easements, and right-of-way research preferred.
- Experience supporting site survey translation into engineering drawings preferred.
- Candidates with strong 2D AutoCAD backgrounds preferred over candidates whose experience is primarily Revit or 3D modeling focused.
Work Environment / Additional Information
- Onsite role supporting telecommunications infrastructure projects in Chantilly, Virginia.
- Position includes office-based drafting work with possible site survey support.
- Strong focus on quality, organization, and independent task management is required.
