The Pneumatic Tube Network Reliability Analyst is responsible for improving the reliability, performance, and operational safety of hospital pneumatic tube systems.

This position combines equipment reliability, operational analytics, clinical workflow support, incident investigation, and vendor coordination. The analyst will review system alarms, carrier transit data, station faults, misroutes, equipment failures, and maintenance history to identify recurring problems and recommend corrective actions.

The successful candidate does not need to have previously held the exact title of Pneumatic Tube Network Reliability Analyst. Relevant experience may come from automated material handling, industrial controls, hospital facilities, biomedical equipment, reliability engineering, clinical logistics, distribution automation, or maintenance planning.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Monitor the health and availability of pneumatic tube networks serving hospital pharmacies, laboratories, nursing units, emergency departments, blood banks, and procedural areas.
  • Analyze system alarms, carrier transit times, station downtime, misroutes, blocked zones, blower faults, and recurring equipment failures.
  • Develop reliability dashboards covering uptime, mean time between failures, mean time to repair, repeat incidents, preventive maintenance completion, and service-level performance.
  • Investigate service interruptions using root-cause analysis, fault-tree analysis, and failure-mode analysis.
  • Identify patterns that may indicate mechanical wear, sensor problems, control issues, user error, capacity constraints, or preventive maintenance gaps.
  • Create corrective and preventive action plans for recurring failures.
  • Coordinate planned downtime with pharmacy, laboratory, nursing, facilities, infection prevention, information technology, and hospital leadership.
  • Maintain accurate equipment, incident, work-order, and preventive-maintenance records in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Support technicians by documenting troubleshooting procedures and recurring fault conditions.
  • Work with third-party service providers, controls contractors, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Review vendor service reports and verify that corrective work resolves the reported problem.
  • Train hospital employees on proper carrier loading, station operation, contamination response, and escalation procedures.
  • Support system expansions, station relocations, controller upgrades, and commissioning activities.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for high-priority service interruptions.
  • Prepare monthly reliability reports and present recommendations to operational and clinical stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience in at least one of the following:
    • Equipment reliability
    • Automated material handling
    • Industrial maintenance
    • Controls or automation support
    • Hospital facilities
    • Biomedical equipment
    • Clinical logistics
    • Maintenance planning
  • Experience analyzing equipment failures, operational incidents, service tickets, or maintenance history.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems or comparable work-order platforms.
  • Ability to interpret equipment alarms, fault codes, event logs, or operating trends.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Excel or another analytical reporting tool.
  • Experience coordinating work across technical and nontechnical teams.
  • Ability to communicate during time-sensitive operational incidents.
  • Ability to work on-site in an active hospital environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience with pneumatic tube systems.
  • Experience supporting hospitals, laboratories, pharmacies, blood banks, or other regulated environments.
  • Familiarity with programmable logic controllers, supervisory control and data acquisition systems, building management systems, or industrial-control interfaces.
  • Experience with Power BI, SQL, or another reporting and data-analysis platform.
  • Knowledge of root-cause analysis, failure-mode and effects analysis, Lean, or reliability-centered maintenance.
  • Experience coordinating maintenance that requires infection-control precautions or controlled clinical downtime.
  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional, Lean Six Sigma, CAPM, or comparable certification.

Success Measures

During the first year, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Reduce repeat pneumatic tube incidents by at least 20%.
  • Establish a standardized reliability dashboard for all supported hospital sites.
  • Improve preventive-maintenance completion to at least 95%.
  • Document the ten most common fault conditions and their troubleshooting procedures.
  • Reduce avoidable carrier misroutes and user-loading incidents.
  • Improve communication between technical teams and clinical departments during planned and unplanned downtime.

Physical and Scheduling Requirements

  • Ability to walk through large hospital campuses and access equipment rooms.
  • Ability to occasionally climb ladders or inspect equipment located above ceilings.
  • Ability to lift carriers, tools, or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to participate in scheduled after-hours maintenance and an on-call rotation.
