Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer

  • Location: Austin, TX
  • Type: Contract
  • Job #4255

HNM Systems is the leading tech-enabled professional services provider, shaping the workforce across the telecom, energy, and technology sectors. We connect top specialized talent with direct hire, contract-to-hire, and consulting opportunities that drive fiber expansion, digital infrastructure, wireless networks, and smart grid energy solutions. Our innovative approach delivers high-impact workforce development and consulting outcomes, with a 94% success rate in talent placement and project execution. Relentlessly people-driven, HNM Systems sets the industry standard through an unwavering commitment to exceptional employee experience—establishing a trusted “home base” for our consultants and long-term value for our clients.

In this role, you will not be handed detailed specs. You will own entire vertical slices of the product—from database design to the React frontend to the AI integration logic. You will partner directly with the CTO to take ambiguous problems, shape simple solutions, and ship
production-quality features.

This role is for someone who thrives in the chaos of a startup, prefers shipping quickly over over-engineering, and possesses the curiosity to ask why, the creativity to imagine how, and the aggressiveness to make it happen.

The Stack

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript (Complex state, streaming responses)
  • Backend: Python, Node.js
  • Infra/AI: AWS, Vector Databases, LLM Integrations

What You Will Do

  • Own the Stack End-to-End: You will drive features from vague idea to production deployment. You might spend Monday optimizing a Python backend for LLM orchestration and Tuesday redesigning a React component for a better user experience.
  • Solve Vague Problems: You don’t need a handbook. You can take a one-sentence problem statement, understand the product intent, and build a solution that works.
  • Build High-Quality UIs: You will architect React + TypeScript interfaces that can handle async AI workflows, streaming data, and complex state without becoming fragile.
  • Integrate AI Pragmatically: You will implement LLMs into production workflows—handling prompting, tool calling, guardrails, latency, and cost controls.
  • Manage Trade-offs: You understand that in a startup, “perfect code” is often the enemy of “shipped code.” You know when to incur technical debt to move fast, and you have the discipline to pay it down later.
  • Communicate Clearly: Because we are a team of two, you must be able to articulate why you are making a technical decision, explain risks, and communicate progress to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • 5+ Years of Experience: You have meaningful experience owning software in production. Your title matters less than your impact.

  • Strong Generalist: You have deep competence in React/TypeScript and backend fundamentals (preferably Python or Node). You are not siloed; you can drop into any file in the repo and figure it out.
  • Production Mindset: You have experience not just writing code, but deploying it, monitoring it, and fixing it when it breaks.
  • AI/LLM Curiosity: You don’t need to be a Data Scientist, but you must be comfortable integrating LLMs into product workflows (handling async states, non-deterministic outputs, and context windows).
  • Fast Learner: You might not know every tool we use, but you are the type of engineer who can read the documentation and get rolling immediately.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with vector search, graph, or relational DBs (understanding modeling and performance tradeoffs).
  • Experience with AWS beyond the basics (queues, scheduling, observability).
  • Previous experience at an early-stage startup or a “team of one.”
