Overview
Our customer is seeking a Senior Java Engineer with 8+ years of experience designing, developing, deploying, and supporting modern Java applications and cloud-native services. This role requires strong expertise in Java 17+, Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices, AWS cloud technologies, distributed systems, application security, and production operations.
The successful candidate will independently lead technical initiatives from architecture and design through deployment and operational support while collaborating closely with engineering, platform, product, and security teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain Java and Spring Boot applications, microservices, and secure REST APIs.
- Own technical solutions from architecture and API design through implementation, deployment, and production operation.
- Build and modernize cloud-native applications within AWS environments, improving scalability, resilience, maintainability, and operational readiness.
- Design and implement integrations with API gateways, identity providers, databases, internal platforms, downstream services, and third-party partners.
- Apply API security controls including authentication, authorization, OAuth 2.0, JWT validation, encryption, secrets management, input validation, and sensitive-data protection.
- Design maintainable API contracts with versioning, backward compatibility, idempotency, validation, error handling, and traffic-protection mechanisms.
- Build fault-tolerant services using resilience patterns such as retries, backoff strategies, circuit breakers, rate limiting, health checks, graceful degradation, bulkheads, and failover techniques.
- Improve software quality through automated unit, integration, component, contract, and performance testing.
- Enhance observability using structured logging, distributed tracing, metrics, dashboards, alerts, and operational monitoring.
- Diagnose complex production incidents, conduct root-cause analysis, and implement preventive corrective actions.
- Contribute to CI/CD automation, automated quality controls, vulnerability remediation, and production-readiness activities.
- Analyze application performance, capacity requirements, and cloud resource utilization to identify opportunities for optimization.
- Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, estimation, requirements refinement, and technical planning.
- Identify technical debt and recommend practical improvements related to architecture, security, resiliency, code quality, and developer productivity.
- Create technical documentation covering architecture decisions, API specifications, integrations, operations, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, product owners, security teams, and platform stakeholders while providing technical guidance and mentorship.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Eight or more years of professional software engineering experience demonstrating senior-level technical capability.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java 17 or later.
- Extensive experience developing production applications using Spring Boot and the broader Spring ecosystem.
- Proven experience designing, building, and operating REST APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
- Experience developing cloud-native and containerized applications within AWS environments.
- Strong knowledge of API security including:

- Experience creating automated units, integration, component, contract, and service-level tests.
- Experience with Git, Linux/Unix, CI/CD platforms, build automation, dependency management, and debugging tools.
- Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, observability, scalability testing, and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to independently lead complex engineering initiatives from problem definition through production delivery.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Apigee, AWS API Gateway, or enterprise API management platforms.
- Experience deploying and supporting services using AWS ECS.
- Experience with Terraform, Jenkins, or related automation platforms.
- Experience with Splunk, Dynatrace, Okta, or comparable observability and identity-management solutions.
- Experience modernizing legacy platforms or building highly available multi-region architectures.
- Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging platforms, or asynchronous processing frameworks.
- Experience with cryptographic technologies and security mechanisms such as:

- Experience developing systems operating in regulated environments or handling sensitive consumer information.
- Experience building AI-enabled applications using:

- Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools while maintaining security, privacy, code quality, and engineering standards.
