The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a non-profit organization that fights suicide by raising awareness, educating communities, and advocating for changes in public policies. In addition, AFSP provides support for those who have lost loved ones.
Through its three-year strategic plan, AFSP hopes to increase investment in research, education, advocacy, and support.
While suicide takes more lives in a year than war, murder, and natural disasters combined, suicide prevention programs don’t receive nearly as much funding. Therefore, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention relies on donor and volunteer fundraising to make a difference.
Out of the Darkness Community Walks
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention organizes Out of the Darkness Community Walks in cities across the United States. Through these events, AFSP aims to change the stigma surrounding mental health and bring communities together. As stated on the AFSP website, the mission is to “save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.”
HNM Systems’ Participation
HNM Systems is a proud participant in the San Diego Out of the Darkness Walk. We are honored to support such a meaningful organization. Most importantly, we hope to help shed light on the conversation surrounding mental health and suicide.
As a people-first organization, HNM Systems believes that mental health support extends into the workplace. A healthy workplace culture gives employees an environment where they feel comfortable asking for help.
For example, employers can encourage conversations about mental health, reduce stigma, and recognize that employees bring their whole selves to work. They can also foster a sense of belonging in the workplace. Together, these efforts can help employees know they have support when they need it.
Our participation in the Out of the Darkness Walk reflects that commitment beyond our own organization. By supporting AFSP, we hope to contribute to a broader culture that makes resources easier to access. Ultimately, we want more people to feel empowered to seek support.
